How to Prepare
Success in CAT is typically achieved with a focused 6-to-9-month plan. The key is consistent effort and intensive mock analysis.
| Phase | Duration | Primary Focus | Key Activities |
| Phase 1: Foundation Building | Month 1–3 (e.g., May to July) | Conceptual Clarity | 1. Diagnostic Mock: Take one mock to set a baseline. 2. Master Basics: Cover all fundamentals of Arithmetic, Algebra, Grammar, and easy DILR sets. 3. Reading Habit: Start reading editorials (The Hindu, The Economist, Aeon Essays) for at least 1 hour daily. 4. Formula Log: Start a dedicated notebook for formulas, rules, and vocabulary. |
| Phase 2: Practice & Sectionals | Month 4–5 (e.g., August to September) | Application & Speed | 1. Increase Difficulty: Solve Level 2 (Moderate) questions across all sections. 2. Sectional Mocks: Take 1-2 sectional tests per week for each section (VARC, DILR, QA). 3. DILR Sets: Target 1-2 new, mixed-difficulty DILR sets daily. 4. Mock Tests: Increase to 1 Full-Length Mock every 10–14 days. |
| Phase 3: Maximizing Score | Month 6 (e.g., October to November) | Strategy & Revision | 1. Mock Test Intensity: Increase to 2-3 Full-Length Mocks per week. 2. Analysis is Key: Spend more time analyzing each mock (4 hours) than taking it (2 hours). 3. Refine Strategy: Finalize the order of attempt for the 3 sections and which question types to skip. 4. Final Revision: Only revise notes, formulas, and mock test mistakes; avoid starting new concepts. |
The CAT exam has a sectional time limit of 40 minutes for each of the three sections. The total time is 120 minutes (2 hours).
| Section | Questions (Approx.) | Question Type | Preparation Strategy |
| Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) | 24 | ≈16 RC, ≈8 VA (Para Jumbles, Para Summary, Odd Sentence Out) | Focus is Reading: RC accounts for ≈70% of the section. Practice Active Reading daily from diverse, high-quality sources (Philosophy, Economics, Science). For VA, master the logic behind Para Jumbles (TITA type) and Para Summaries. |
| Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) | 20 (4 sets of 5 questions each) | Logical Puzzles, Conditional Grouping, Tournament, Venn Diagrams, Graphs/Tables. | Focus is Selection: The key is to select 2-3 “doable” sets out of the total 4 in the 40 minutes. Practice a variety of set types daily. Avoid complex calculation sets; prioritize logic and arrangement sets. Accuracy is critical here. |
| Quantitative Ability (QA) | 22 | Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, Modern Maths. | Focus is Arithmetic & Algebra: These topics typically form over 60% of the section. Build deep conceptual clarity from the basics. Memorize core formulas. Use shortcuts and approximation for speed, but remember CAT questions test conceptual depth, not just fast arithmetic. |
CAT preparation requires standard books that cover concepts comprehensively and provide high-difficulty practice.
| Section | Recommended Books |
| Quantitative Ability | How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for CAT by Arun Sharma or Quantitative Aptitude Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Verma. NCERT Maths (Class 9 & 10) for beginners. |
| DILR | How to Prepare for Logical Reasoning for CAT by Arun Sharma and How to Prepare for Data Interpretation for CAT by Arun Sharma or Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation for CAT by Nishit K. Sinha. |
| VARC | Word Power Made Easy by Norman Lewis (for Vocabulary). High School English Grammar & Composition by Wren & Martin (for Grammar). Practice RC passages from top coaching institutes’ material. |
| Must-Have | Official CAT Previous Year Papers (Last 5 years) for the most accurate exam simulation. |
Mock Test Analysis is King (The 1:2 Rule): For every 2-hour mock test, dedicate 4 hours to analysis. Review every question: attempted correctly, attempted incorrectly, and not attempted. Understand why you chose or skipped a question.
Accuracy over Attempts: CAT penalizes incorrect answers (-1 mark), making accuracy paramount. Aim for 85−90% accuracy in your attempts rather than maximizing volume.
Know the Sectional Cutoffs: To get an IIM call, you need to clear the minimum percentile in each of the three sections, not just a high overall score. This means you cannot ignore your weakest section.
TITA Questions: Practice Type In The Answer (TITA) questions as they have no negative marking. These are a great source for securing marks, particularly in the VA part of VARC.
